Recognizing Borealis Lighting Studio's Hsin-Ying Huang + Leela Shanker

BR+A prides itself on being on the forefront of Lighting Design through the implementation of the Borealis Lighting Studio. We believe our company is on the convergence of technicality, sustainability, and aesthetics. This is what allows us to work in a multitude of industries spanning healthcare, higher education, performance spaces, and laboratories. Two of our employees have been recognized for their incredible work in the industry.

Hsin-Ying Huang was a speaker at the 2021 Illuminating Engineering Society (IES) Annual Conference where she presented her thesis: “Possibility of Parametric Design for Electrical Lighting Practice.” Her thesis explores the development and utilization of parametric tools in the design process. Her thesis posits “there is a feasible workflow for electric lighting design utilizing parametric digital tools, that will improve the design process in SD and DD by improving the photometrically accurate lighting visualizations used to communicate with others including architects, engineers, and clients, and by improving iterative lighting calculations.” Parametric design is in the vanguard of lighting design through its ability to optimize workflow due to its utilization of 3D visualization layouts.

Leela Shanker spoke for the IES Meet the Moment Series. The webinar was on Lighting and Sustainability and was conducted on September 2, 2021. The event was partnered with Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL). She spoke alongside Gabe Arnold, a Senior Engineer and Kate Hickcox, a lighting research scientist who both work at PNNL. Leela’s current work with the GLA (Global Lighting Association), AIA’s Committee on the Environment (COTE) and Carbon Leadership Forum New York chapter centers on lighting-specific issues related to Embodied Carbon and Life Cycle Assessment. Her presentation addressed the importance of understanding lighting life cycles to reduce hazardous materials, utilize replaceable components, and design recyclable installations.

We are proud to have accomplished thought leaders in the Lighting Design industry at our company.
